Summer is fun, but it is tough on your skin

Sun, salt water, chlorine and a lot of sweat. That is a normal summer weekend in South Africa. It is also a recipe for skin that feels tight, dry and a bit tired by Sunday night.

The good news is that your routine does not need to be long or fancy. A few simple habits can make a real difference. Sea moss can be part of that routine, and here is how to use it.

Why people reach for sea moss in summer

Sea moss is a type of seaweed. It contains minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, and it feels cool and slippery on the skin. Many people enjoy using it because it feels hydrating and soothing after a long day outside.

We are not saying it is a cure for sunburn or a replacement for sunscreen. It is not. Think of it as a gentle extra step in your after-sun routine.

Step 1: Rinse off the day

Salt and chlorine can dry out your skin, so rinse off soon after you get out of the water. A gentle soap helps here. Our sea moss soaps are handcrafted and come in Ocean Breeze and Midnight Tide. Ocean Breeze feels fresh and light, which suits a hot afternoon. Midnight Tide is made with sea moss and bladderwrack, so it feels a little richer.

Tip: Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water can strip even more moisture from sun-tired skin.

Step 2: Try a sea moss gel face mask

This is the easy part. Our sea moss gels can be used on your face, body and hair as well as eaten, so one jar goes a long way.

Here is a simple mask:

  • Wash your face and pat it dry.
  • Spread a thin layer of gel over your face and neck.
  • Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with cool water and pat dry.

Do a small patch test on your inner arm first, especially if you have sensitive skin. Wait a day to see how your skin reacts.

Many of our customers like the flavoured gels, like mango and strawberry, for eating. If you want one just for your skin routine, the raw gel is a good place to start.

Step 3: Moisturise and protect

After your mask, use your usual moisturiser. Then keep up the sunscreen the next day. Reapply it every two hours when you are outside, and more often after swimming. No skin care product, sea moss included, can do the job of sunscreen.

Step 4: Look after your skin from the inside too

Skin care is not only about what you put on it. Drinking enough water, eating fresh summer fruit and getting enough rest all matter. Some people also add a daily serving of sea moss. You can stir a spoon of gel into a smoothie, or use our sea moss powder if you prefer something you can mix into drinks and food.

A simple summer skin routine

  1. After swimming: rinse with a gentle sea moss soap.
  2. Evening: apply a thin layer of gel as a mask, then moisturise.
  3. Every morning: sunscreen, always.
  4. Daily: drink plenty of water and add sea moss to your routine if you enjoy it.

Final thoughts

Summer skin care does not need ten products. Keep it simple, keep it consistent and listen to your skin. If you have a skin condition or are not sure whether something is right for you, speak to your doctor or pharmacist first.
