One seaweed, four ways to enjoy it

If you are new to sea moss, the choices can feel confusing. Raw, gel, powder, capsules. Which one should you pick?

The honest answer is that it depends on how you live. A beach-hopping holiday needs something different from a busy workweek. Here is a simple breakdown of each type, so you can choose with confidence.

Raw sea moss

Raw sea moss is the most hands-on option. It arrives dried. You rinse it, soak it, and blend it with water to make your own gel at home.

Vitality Moss is South Africa’s certified importer of both Irish (purple) and Caribbean (gold) raw sea moss, and you can find both in our raw range.

Best for: people who enjoy making things from scratch and want to control the thickness and flavour of their gel.

Keep in mind: it takes time and a blender. Dried sea moss keeps well, but your homemade gel needs the fridge.

Sea moss gel

Gel is the ready-to-go option. It is smooth, cool and easy to add to food and drinks. Our sea moss gels come in raw, mango, strawberry, litchi, apple and fruit cocktail flavours, so there is something for most tastes.

You can stir it into a smoothie, eat a spoonful on its own, or use it on your skin and hair as well.

Best for: summer at home. Gel is lovely in cold smoothies and fruity drinks, and it works as both food and skin care.

Keep in mind: it needs to be kept cold, so it is not the easiest option for long trips.

Sea moss powder

Powder is the flexible one. It is light, it does not need the fridge, and it dissolves easily. Our sea moss powder can go into smoothies and shakes. You can also use it as a natural thickener in soups, sauces and dressings.

Best for: people who cook, make smoothies, or like to experiment in the kitchen. It is also great for travel.

Keep in mind: you will need to mix it well so it does not clump. A shaker bottle or a blender works best.

Sea moss capsules

Capsules are the easiest of all. There is no taste, no mixing and no prep. Each of our Irish sea moss capsules contains 1000mg of sea moss with no artificial fillers.

Best for: busy days, travel, and anyone who does not enjoy the taste or texture of sea moss.

Keep in mind: capsules cannot be used on your skin, so if you want a topical option you will need gel.

Which one should you choose?

Think about your summer and pick the line that sounds like you.

  • “I love a cold smoothie by the pool.” Go for gel.
  • “I am always on the road.” Go for capsules or powder.
  • “I love cooking and trying new things.” Go for powder or raw.
  • “I want to make my own gel.” Go for raw.
  • “I want the simplest thing possible.” Go for capsules.

You do not have to pick just one. Many people use gel at home and keep capsules in their bag for busy days.

Final thoughts

The best form of sea moss is the one you will actually use. Start with the one that fits your lifestyle, and change it up later if your routine changes. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a thyroid condition or take medication, check with your doctor before you start.
